The Journey to Flipping Houses

I often hear from listeners who are struggling with decisions or wondering why they want to pursue flipping houses. Something I’ve said has made it all make sense for them. These episodes often revolve around my career shift—how I went from a professional career into flipping homes as a business. It wasn’t intentional, and it’s not why I started, but if you’re listening, there’s a good chance you’ve thought about flipping houses too.

Maybe you’ve dabbled, done a live-in flip, or are considering a career shift. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to move from a structured job with a paycheck every two weeks to a real estate house-flipping business, you’re in the right place. That’s what we’re diving into today.

From Corporate Life to House Flipping

When I first started flipping, I was in a corporate job with a structured schedule. I had a young family and realized I wanted more flexibility. I didn’t want to wait until 6:00 PM to see my kids for the first time each day. I wanted to be present for them. This realization led me to explore flipping houses as a way to create a career that supported my family and gave me the freedom I craved.

The First Flip

When I did my first flip, I wasn’t thinking about replacing my career. I had a job where I was told I’d need to take on 85% travel to advance. With a young child at home and plans for another, I felt conflicted. I loved my job but didn’t want to sacrifice my family for it. That’s when the idea of flipping houses as a side hustle came to mind.

I had always loved the idea of flipping, inspired by early HGTV shows. I knew I had a knack for design and numbers, so I decided to give it a try. I didn’t start with a big business plan or a ton of capital. Instead, I got creative with funding, using a traditional mortgage, a 401(k) loan, and even a cash advance on a credit card.

Building Confidence and Overcoming Challenges

The first few projects were a learning experience. I even had a business partner initially, which helped with funding but came with its own challenges. Eventually, I decided to go solo, which gave me the confidence to move forward on my own.

It took five years from my first flip to leaving my corporate job. During that time, I juggled work, family, and flipping. I turned date nights into trips to Home Depot and spent weekends and evenings working on projects. It was messy, but it was worth it.

Creating a Sustainable Business

As I completed more flips, I realized this wasn’t a fluke. My properties were selling quickly, often with multiple offers. I wasn’t just flipping houses—I was creating homes that felt intentional and elevated. This approach set my business apart and made it sustainable.

The Transition to Full-Time Flipping

After a few years, I left my corporate job and created a business that not only supported my family financially but also gave us the flexibility to live the life we wanted. I could take my kids to school, attend their games, and go on family vacations without worrying about office politics or schedules.

Helping Others Flip with Purpose

Over time, I realized that my approach to flipping was different from the flashy, fast-money image often portrayed. My flipping business reflected my values and priorities, and I wanted to help others create businesses that aligned with their own visions.

Now, I’ve worked with hundreds of people, helping them develop their flipping businesses and achieve their goals. Many have left their full-time jobs to flip houses full-time, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them succeed.
